Early research evaluated C. ternatea for its potential as a fodder and forage crop, given its lengthy history of cultivation in both capacities. These include being a crop that fixes nitrogen, providing fodder, and being used in cosmetics, culinary coloring, traditional medicine, and as a source of environmentally benign insecticide. The latter are identified as the bioactive ingredients in a plant extract that is sold as an insecticide and are powerful insecticidal compounds. The intriguing co-optation of an ancestral albumin gene to provide the cyclotide precursor protein is the genetic source of these peptides. Howeverelase-1 is the name of the asparaginyl endopeptidase that is involved in the biosynthetic process that forms the cyclic peptide backbone in C. ternatea.
