Buttonwood, or Conocarpus erectus, is a form of buttonwood that is locally known as the Damas tree. It often grows as a low branching shrub with several trunks, but in the right circumstances, silver buttonwood can develop into a lovely vase-shaped tree that can reach heights of up to 50 feet (15.2 meters) and widths of up to 20 feet (6.1 meters). The evergreen leaves are alternately arranged, 2-4 in (5.1-10.2 cm) long, and have an oblong to lance-shaped form. The leaves of silver buttonwood are covered in a dense mat of silky hairs, giving the plant a stunning silver-gray hue, in contrast to the glabrous (hairless) leaves of ordinary buttonwood. The fruit clusters are fairly striking, button-shaped, brownish-red cones with numerous tiny fruits inside, whereas the blooms themselves are rather insignificant. The cultivar known as "Momba" is smaller and features a highly dense crown.
