The pencil cactus, Euphorbia tirucalli, is a fascinating plant native to semi-arid tropical areas with succulent foliage. In the wild, it can get rather big. The plant gets its common name from its thick, brown branches that have clusters of smaller, green branches at their ends. These branches are cylindrical and about the thickness of a pencil. Oval leaves that can reach a length of an inch are seen on the branches. Also, tiny flowers sprout at the tips of the verdant branches in the late spring and early summer.
